Change is a natural part of life, but that doesn’t mean it always feels easy. Whether it’s a new season, a shift in relationships, kids returning to or leaving for school, or changes within ourselves, these moments can leave us feeling unsteady. Just like Fall teaches us to let go gracefully, we too can learn to rest, reset, and find balance when life feels new, unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

The Nature of Change

Times of change and transition can be both exciting and stressful. Often, it can trigger feelings of loss, anxiety, or the fear of the unknown. Everyone responds to change differently, so it is important to be remember: your feelings are valid, and may be different than someone else going through similar circumstances. Finding a way to ground yourself during a season of change can help create stability and compassion for yourself during the transition.

Practical Ways to Ground Yourself

1. Breathe

It may sound simple, but we often forget to just breathe! Many of us hold stress and tension in our bodies and the simple act of connecting with your breath can help calm your nervous system and help keep you in the present moment. Try slowing down with a few deep inhales and exhales when you start to notice your stress and tension rising.

2. Create Routines and Rituals

Even if you are not naturally someone who likes structure, consistent routines and rituals can help create comfort and predictability when life starts to feel out of control. Simple things like lighting a candle, journaling, or taking a walk can help reduce stress and give your brain a place to park itself.

3. Connect with Nature

Fall is the perfect time to get outside and remember change can be beautiful. Spend time outside noticing the beautiful colors, the chill of the crisp air, and the falling leaves. Nature has a way of grounding us and calming the chaos.

4. Set Boundaries

Going through major life transitions can be mentally and physically exhausting. You may notice you have less energy or feel more fatigued. It is important to recognize your own needs and set gentle but firm boundaries with your time, energy, and people in your life. Give yourself permission to say no, rest more, or create space where you need it. Boundaries can help you create a much needed balance during times of change and transition.

Embracing Balance in the In-Between

Grounding yourself during change isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about finding steadiness in small, intentional ways and remembering that it’s okay to take things one step at a time. Just as the seasons remind us, every ending ushers in a new beginning.

As you navigate your own season of change, may you find balance, compassion, and the courage to let yourself grow.

Find Your Balance with Support

Change can feel isolating, but you don't have to go through it alone. Seek the support of a friend, partner, or family member. Support groups are also a great way to connect with others that may be experiencing a similar transition. Sharing your experience with others can help you feel less alone and help validate your feelings.
